Now, the 56-year-old needs help from the community he serves, a friend wrote on a GoFundMe page she started.

On August 6, Blasko suffered a massive heart attack and was resuscitated after his heart stopped beating, his friend wrote on the page.

Medical staff at the hospital unclogged Blasko's two arteries that were completely blocked and he was placed on a ventilator while doctors assess any brain damage, his friend said.

"John is a kind, generous, compassionate man who works at a homeless shelter helping others and making a big impact in his community. Because of all his hard work and dedication to the cause, he is beloved by many."

His friend explained that any donations to the GoFundMe page would help Blasko and his wife afford medical treatment, pay for food, compensate for lost wages, all while he awaits further treatment.

The fundraising page had raised almost $600 of their $50,000 goal as of August 25.
